Literature Text

In Summer's sun I danced away my days,
Foolish in my youthful lover's glee.
My pride let all your kisses go to waste;
The time has never flown so easily.

As in the fable of the ancient one,
I should have treasured when I had your all.
For soon enough our love affair was done-
Our hearts, like leaves, surrendered to the Fall.

And when the cold of Winter came along,
Empty handed, starving, in the cold.
If I had treasured when romance was strong,
I would have plenty stored within to hold.

I swear I'll take for granted nothing more,
God grant me one last Summer like before.
A Shakespearean sonnet, inspired by Aesop's fable about the Ant and the Grasshopper.

A sonnet at its most classic in both form and content. The couplet is particularly well done.
